Best way to destroy Burrs??

My horses find all the burrs on the perimeter of our fields & under the trees. I can cut them down but anyone know of an easy way to kill the root? I'm spending hours de-burring with baby oil & hair conditioner!!

oh! I hate burrs.....someone once told me lime works??? not sure though
